Last Thursday I went to visit the farmer’s market at the White House. Unfortunately, I didn’t bump into the First Lady Michelle Obama but I did find this. She’s an amazing advocate for eating healthy and supporting local purveyors. I mean, we bought her book American Grown — it’s filled with White House gardening secrets & scrumptious farmers’ market recipes.
My purchase: A dozen free range eggs and a lovely jar of raw wildflower honey from the Culver Farm.
Address: 810 Vermont Ave. NW
(between H St. NW and I St. NW)
Nearest Metro: McPherson Square (Blue and orange lines)
The White House farmer’s market is open 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Summer can be the most magical of times, especially when neighborhood street markets begin to pop up. Suddenly, DC is bustling with outdoor concerts, homemade crafts and fresh local produce. Oh, yes. THE JOYS OF SUMMER.
Last weekend we stumbled upon The MAKE IT Mount Pleasant Handmade Craft and Vintage Market. The whole sha-bang was a lively display of musical entertainment, crafty vendors and sidewalk sales from local restaurants like Dos Gringos & Tonic Restaurant.
The market was a tad small but the community spirit (and shopping selection!) was G-R-E-A-T. Vintage clothing, jewelry of all kinds, artisanal food creations, beauty products and house wares. SO MANY charming handmade pieces.

QUICK! Go visit the Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market! The Pleasant Pops truck will be there from 8:30AM-1PM. Try Strawberry Ginger Lemonade, Summer Strawberry or Cucumber Chile. YUMMY!
Location: 20th St. NW between Massachusetts Ave. and Connecticut Ave
“The Dupont Circle FRESHFARM Market is located in the heart of one of Washington, DC’s most vibrant and diverse neighborhoods. Washingtonian magazine credits the market with “teaching Washingtonians to love their fruits and vegetables.” The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times of London also named the market one of the top farmers’ markets in the country. During the peak season, there are more than 40 farmers offering fruits and vegetables, meat, poultry, fish, cheeses, fruit pies, breads, fresh pasta, cut flowers, potted plants, soaps and herbal products.”

The creators of Pleasant Pops, Roger & Brian, are local DC food artisans. Their icy flavored popsicles can be found at farmers’ markets throughout the District. With summertime upon us, finding the pop truck in your neighborhood is a welcomed refreshing treat.
Each pop is handmade with fresh local ingredients. Delicious flavors like, Mexican Chocolate, Pineapple Basil, Thai Coconut Curry Cream and Cantaloupe Mint instantly make your mouth water.
Elizabeth and I are the BIGGEST pop fans. Two of our favorite flavors are Honey Lavender Cream and Strawberry Rhubarb. We asked the popsicle men to share their not-so-secret recipe and they obliged. Hand Drawn Bazaar is sharing goodness with you! Simply click the photo above for illustrated instructions.
Plus, this summer the food truck is opening a year-round community market in Adams Morgan. The Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market raised over $20,000 on Kickstarter and will offer a variety of seasonal local products including:
- Seasonal local produce & dairy
- Handmade bread
- Jams, jellies and pickles
- Roasted coffee
- Vegetarian sandwiches & salads
